Mahlkönig X54 Allround Coffee Grinder - A Unicorn?

I can’t confirm whether or not unicorns exist, but I can confidently say I’ve never seen one. I’ve never seen a home coffee grinder that can capably grind for espresso brewing and coarse filter brewing, but the new Mahlkönig X54 Allround grinder is as close to a unicorn as I’ll ever see.

Mahlkönig has a reputation that precedes thems. You’ve likely seen their flagship grinder behind the bar of one of your favourite cafes, and for good reason - the EK43 from Mahlkönig is one of the most legendary espresso grinders of all time, seemingly transcending time itself.

The Mahlkönig X54 Allround Home Grinder is a new offering from the German manufacturer, presented as an all around option for coffee enthusiasts looking to grind their own beans at home for espresso to French press.

One of the standout features of this grinder is its 54mm flat burrs, which provide a consistent grind and allow for precise adjustment of the grind size across the entire range. The burrs are made of high-grade steel, ensuring they will stay sharp for a long time.

The X54 also has a powerful, yet quiet, motor that can grind up to 2.2 pounds of coffee per minute. This makes it a great option for both home use and small commercial operations, which I can confirm - I’m currently using one at home for mostly filter grinding, in my office for mostly espresso, and in my mobile cafe for both espresso and batch filter grinding.

In addition to its impressive technical capabilities, the X54 also has a sleek and durable design. The hopper and grind chamber are made of high-quality plastic, and the grinder is a rather compact size that makes it easy to store on the countertop or coffee bar. It simply looks sharp as h*ck.

Here are some quick facts about the X54:
- 54mm flat steel burrs
- Stepless adjustment for precise grind settings, from espresso to French press
- Easily swappable fronts for on-demand filter or espresso grinding
- LED display with 4 time presets and manual mode
- Grinding sound below 70 dB(A)
- Optional low-profile hopper for under cabinet use
- Dosing cup included

Now I want to know - what do you look for in a home grinder? Whether it’s the one you currently have or another that’s on your wishlist, I’m curious what your priorities are. Let me know in the comments!
