My Favourite Glass Server

It doesn't matter what you brew your coffee into, right? Well yes and no.

Yes, it doesn't matter because if you've done a good job brewing your coffee it's going to taste good no matter what you brew it into (unless you brew it into a shoe, then likely it wouldn't taste great). But let's assume you're brewing your coffee into something worth drinking it out of - it should taste great! So why do you see some people (of whom I am the chief...) brewing into glass servers?

Are all glass servers equal?

Well, there's a couple advantages. Primarily it gives you the opportunity to brew more than one cup's worth into a single vessel so you can share with family and friends. After all, coffee is meant to be shared. In my case, I rarely brew more than one cup at a time so why do I brew into a server?

I also brew into a server for the same reasons you decant a nice red wine. Giving your coffee a swirl and a sniff before you pour it into your drinking mug serves it well by introducing some oxygen into it aerating the beverage. The sniff helps to calibrate my senses before I even take a sip, setting my expectations for what I'm about to taste. The oxygen you introduce during swirling and pouring will actually accelerate what I like to call the “breathing” process as the aromatics of your coffee open up and some volatile compounds are exchanged by evaporation. On top of all of that it also helps to cool your drink down a few degrees so you can enjoy it sooner - who wouldn't want that?

So at this point I may have convinced you that there’s actually a reason to brew into a server, but surely it doesn’t matter which server you choose, right? Well not exactly.

I have a few different servers on my bar and they’ve all served me well (pun entirely intended), but my newest one is my best one.

This is the new Mighty Small Glass Carafe from Fellow Products and I'm absolutely in love with it. It's a little more sturdy than my other servers and a lot more pretty. But looks aren’t everything, right? Let’s break down how it functions!

No Drip Spout

And it does exactly what it says - pours from the spout with no drips. The wide mouth is a touch I don’t see on too many servers!

Sturdy Little Handle

This server feels more sturdy than every other one I’ve used, made with a little more material with the home brewer in mind. This handle is a pleasure to hold and pour from.

Hand Blown Glass

You can feel the quality of the glass when you hold this thing, and you can rest assured knowing that you’re safe brewing on it and into it. In fact, the diameter of the top is designed to fit most (if not all) pour over style brewers, including the Aeropess!

Two Colours

This carafe comes in two colours - the classic clear and a new smoke grey that I’m absolutely in love with.

At the end of the day all glass servers are all just glass servers, but I’ve used almost all of them and this Mighty Small Carafe is my favourite amongst them all.

Are you brewing into a server of some sort? Let me know which one in the comments!
