Best Pourover Brewer? (as voted by you!)

A question I get more often than most is "Alexander, what's the best pour over brewer?", and if you’re reading this it’s likely you just asked Google that very question.

There are so many great brewing devices to help you brew better coffee at home, and my favourite of them usually just depends on the day of the week. But I really want to know, what is the best pour over brewer? So in true democratic form, we're going to figure it out by means of a battle. Introducing, the Battle of the Brewers.

Here's how it works

Battle Of The Brewers

⁣I've put together a bracket 16 of the most popular home brewing devices. Each day on my Instagram Stories you'll be able to vote on which brewer you prefer, eliminating the one with the least amount of votes and moving the winner onto the next round.⁣

The Competitors

  • Hario V60

  • Hario Woodneck Drip Pot

  • French Press

  • Gina Smart Dripper

  • Siphon

  • Clever Dripper

  • Fellow Stagg [X]

  • Phoenix 70

  • Kalita Wave

  • Bee House Ceramic Dripper

  • Chemex

  • Fellow Duo

  • It’s American Press

  • Mokapot

  • Aeropress

  • December Dripper

After four rounds we'll be down to two home brewers to battle it off and be crowned the best home brewer, as voted on by you!⁣

Simple enough? Well, let's get to it! Vote on Round Two on Instagram today!

Hario V60
Kalita Wave

Round One Results

In classic 1v8 fashion, the Hario V60 defeated the Woodneck Drip Pot with 97% of the vote. The Kalita Wave had a similar dominating performance, taking down the Bee House Dripper with 93%.

The two seeds had a similar display of dominance, with the Aeropress taking 97% of the vote over the December Dripper and the Fellow Stagg [X] showing the Phoenix 70 who’s the boss with 81%.

To round out the first round, here’s how the rest of the battles went down:
The classic French Press defeated the Gina Smart Dipper with 71%
Possibly the most beautiful brewer, the Chemex took out the Fellow Duo definitively with 95%
Mokapot lovers showed up to defeat the American Press with 67%
Finally the Clever Dripper narrowly took home a victory over the Siphon with 57%

Round Two Results

Round Two certainly saw some more drama than Round One as we got our first upset! The Chemex shocked the world, taking out the Kalita Wave positively. The rest of the field rounded up nearly as expected, although the Clever Dripper made it interesting. Here’s how things shook out:

The beloved Hario V60 obliterated the French press with 89% of the vote.
In a shocking turn of events, the Kalita Wave was upset by the Chemex, losing to 63%
The Clever Dripper made things interesting but ended up losing in a close race to the Fellow Stagg [X] with 60%
The Aeropress shocked no one with a dominating performance over the Mokapot with 86%

The Semifinals

With the exception of the Chemex earning a spot over the Kalita Wave, the semi finals ironed out in the way that I expected. Four spots for four beloved brewers. Let’s see who earned a spot in the finals!

In a tight race, the Aeropress edged out the Chemex with 61% of the vote.
The other side of the bracket wasn’t so competitive as the Hario V60 ran away with the victory and into the finals by 93%, defeating the Fellow Stagg [X].

I think the voters have made their statement about how they feel about the V60. In each round it has won by at least 89% of the vote. But does it stand a chance against arguably the most versatile brewer, the Aeropress?

The Finals

I’m going to save my commentary on this battle for a future post, but here’s how the finals went down. Two brewers fought it out for two well deserved spots, and it all came down to this. I asked the question, “What’s the best home brewer?” and you answered it with your votes. Without further adieu, your favourite brewer, the Hario V60.
